About the project

South Melbourne Park Primary School is a co-educational Prep to Year 6 school. We built it for 550 students, and it opened for Term 1, 2019.

It was designed by Gray Puksand and was a finalist in the 2019 Victorian School Design Awards.

Located in Albert Park Reserve, the school is surrounded by unique flora and fauna, and close to sporting facilities such as the Victorian Institute of Sport, Athletics Victoria and the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.

Check out the school's website for more information.

Facilities

The school incorporates the old Albert Park Signal Depot and Drill Hall heritage buildings, alongside modern new facilities including a double-storey learning communities building and a competition-grade gym.

The design and development of the school was overseen by a New School Planning Group made up of parents, educational experts, project planners and representatives from the community.

The repurposed Drill Hall houses:

  • 4 learning communities
  • a library
  • a dedicated art/science/technology space
  • specialist music areas
  • a flexible exhibition space
  • a student canteen.

The Mess Hall contains the reception, leadership and administration areas. The existing West and East Houses have also been opened up for learning facilities.

Sustainable design

All facilities were designed with an environmentally sustainable approach. New insulation was used in the ceilings of the older building whenever possible.

We installed 2,500L rainwater tanks to each of the residences and the Drill Hall. These are used for toilet flushing and irrigation.

New buildings are naturally ventilated with openable windows, or use outside air fans or mechanical services where this is not possible.

Funding

This school received $21.6 million from the 2017–18 State Budget. This is in addition to the $8.4 million allocated from the 2016–17 Budget, and the $1 million given to begin project planning in 2015–16.
