Point Cook South Specialist School (interim name)

• We are building the schools in the Point Cook South West area of East Werribee.
• Werribee sits within Melbourne’s western corridor and is home to over 600 hectares of Government-owned land previously occupied by the State Research Farm.
• East Werribee Precinct will be a new centre for jobs and housing in Melbourne’s growing western corridor.

• Many factors, including population forecasting, help determine where new schools are built.
• Point Cook South West will become a growth area for families as the area develops. This will create additional demand for school places.
• We looked for potential locations for the school in this area. We considered transport, accessibility and cost.
• The area will change over the coming years as more development occurs.

• We are building these schools in stages. We are focusing on key buildings to cater for initial enrolments for both the specialist and P-9 schools.
• Both the specialist and P-9 schools will open for day 1, Term 1 2026.
• P-9 students and specialist students will share the specialist school site until the P-9 school is complete. The schools will operate independently.
• On the shared site, the P-9 school will have access to:
  • a learning neighbourhood
  • an administration and library building including a first aid room and staff spaces
  • playgrounds and shaded areas
  • a half-court hardcourt
  • a shared multi-purpose building with dedicated spaces for physical activity and fitness, performing arts, food technology and a canteen.
• On the shared site, the specialist school will have access to:
  • 2 learning neighbourhoods
  • an administration and library building including first aid and staff spaces
  • playgrounds and shaded areas
  • a half-court hardcourt
  • a shared multi-purpose building with dedicated spaces for physical activity and fitness, performing arts, food technology and a canteen
  • a secure carpark and bus drop-off area.
• We expect to complete the Point Cook South P-9 (interim name) school for Term 3, 2027.

• We are building these schools in stages. We are focusing on key buildings to cater for initial enrolments for both the specialist and P-9 schools.
• The schools are in an emerging growth area.
• The Department of Transport and Planning is preparing the land to build these schools.
• These works include building roads, intersections and drainage, as well as service infrastructure like electricity, water and sewerage.
• These services need to be in place before the schools can be built.
• The specialist school site will be ready for construction first.

Parts of the specialist school will be modified to accommodate P-9 students while the P-9 school is completed. This is to allow each school to operate independently. There will be separate main entrances, reception areas, toilets, first aid rooms, learning spaces and playgrounds for specialist and P-9 students, along with separate staff areas.

Safety is front of mind for all school designs. The design of the shared schools will be designed and constructed to ensure all compliance requirements are met, including access, fire safety and emergency exits.

The specialist school boundary fencing is designed to prevent unauthorised entry to or exit from the school. This fencing, combined with a design that supports child supervision, will help to ensure that all children are safe within the shared site.

In 2026, the school will be open to Foundation (Prep) to Grade 5 students with mild to profound intellectual disability. A full enrolment policy, providing detailed entry eligibility criteria, will be available during Term 2, 2025.

The school is open for 2026 enrolments for students in Foundation (Prep) to Grade 5.

All students who live in the school zone are guaranteed a place at the new school (for the 2026 school year this applies to students in Foundation (Prep) to Grade 5). Students who live outside the school zone can apply for enrolment and the school will enrol them in line with the Department of Education’s Placement Policy.

In 2027, the school will progress to the full primary school offering of Foundation to Grade 6. Secondary school enrolments will be offered from 2028 starting with Year 7 and progressively adding a new year level each year until 2030.

There are 2 government senior secondary schools servicing the Point Cook and East Werribee areas – Point Cook Senior Secondary College and Homestead Senior Secondary College. Both of these schools offer Years 10 to 12.
